Three sizes is three models

A founder asked whether S, M and L count as one model or three against a 300 per model minimum. Each size carries its own tooling, jigs, fixtures and setup, so an order that looks comfortably large can divide three ways into three that are not.

FIG. N1 The same range in three sizes, with the bridge holding at one number

A founder wrote in with a good first question.

MOQ is 300 per model. With S/M/L, is that one model or three?

Three.

Why it is three

Not because we want it to be. Each size runs its own tooling, its own jigs, its own fixtures, and its own machine setup.

Some parts carry across. Hinges, screws, temple tips, sometimes the bridge. The trade still counts three sizes as three separate models, and so do we.

There is a tell in almost any size chart. Frame width moves. Lens width moves. Frame height moves. Temple length moves. The bridge often holds at the same number across all three.

Those are not one frame scaled up and down. They were drawn separately, and that is the same reason they get built separately.

What the minimum attaches to

Our minimum is 300 per model. It applies to metal and to acetate.

Injection moulding works differently. It needs a mould paid for up front, and a custom moulded model starts around 2,000.

So the material decides which minimum you are working against, and the number of sizes decides how many times you meet it.

The arithmetic that catches people

An order can look comfortably large and still fail this test.

Divide a single total across three sizes and each size has to clear the minimum on its own. Three sizes of a moulded sports frame is a very different commitment from three sizes of an acetate one, and the gap is not quality. It is tooling.

The usual way through is to launch one size and add the others once the first sells. That is a range decision, not a factory decision, and it is easier to make before anything is cut than after a quote lands.

What we can do is make sure the number being divided is the right one.

Problems like this one are absorbable.
